Well, on Saturday, June 11, 2011, I officially became an alumnus of my now alma mater, Oregon State University. Initially, I wasn't going to walk in the ceremony, as there are so many people walking and the ceremony isn't really that personal, but a friend of mine talked me into it. I am so thankful that she did. As I descended down the walkway into Reser Stadium, I felt like a rock star/famous athlete. Not because I was graduating, but because there were a ton of people packed into Reser, all cheering. I almost ran towards one of the end zones and spiked an imaginary football, but alas I did not do so. The ceremony was actually agonizing. All of the graduates were packed into these little seats, it almost felt as if we were all on an airplane, but stuck on the runway. Eventually, the ceremony ended and I had my diploma in hand!
After graduation, my friends and family (and roommate) all headed to a church for a BBQ party thing. At this BBQ party thing, my parents presented me with a graduation gift. Inside the package was what I had hoped it would be...a stethoscope. As I opened it, I was hit with the full on realization that I would be beginning my quest towards physicianship (new word) in less than two months. This handy dandy tool will become one of my best friends in the coming years. The realization that I would be embarking on a quest that would last a lifetime, that would be filled with extreme joy, extreme sorrow, extreme responsibility and other extreme things was humbling. Okay, enough of this introspective rambling (that is what blogs are for, are they not?) for now, and on to bigger and better things!
Lastly, I am beginning to make arrangement for my move to Iowa. I applied for a wonderful apartment last week or something like that and was accepted! This apartment is so awesome and only a few minutes from campus! The apartment is in a building that dates to the 1920s, and because it is older, my bedroom has French doors! Do you know what this means??? I can make grand entrances into the living room by flinging the doors wide open and saying "Good morning Des Moines!" Also, my last day of work was last Friday, and leaving was much more difficult than expected. The people I worked with were awesome. I want to give a special shout out to my boss, Lisa Truong. She was the most incredible boss a guy could ask for. I have no clue how many times I screwed up, but she was always forgiving and mostly never angry (except when I spilled the silver nano particles...oops!). I will never forget my time spent under her tutelage, thank you Lisa.
That is it for now. I will continue to update y'all as often as I can...oh yeah, OHSU has gone through 74 people on the waitlist...22 more until they get to me!
Peace and Blessings, Peace and Blessings,
Mark Halvorson
